When Ads go bad - Surefire way to turn off your blog visitors
September 25, 2007I’ve been keeping an eye on the various discussions on using Ads on Blogs,
Advertising on personal blogs - right or wrong?, and Adverts - Only for the web illiterate, both originating from The Vulgarities of Web Ads.
One issue that was raised was the content of the Ad, Googles Contextual Adsense seems to be the weapon of choice for many publishers, which allows a certain amount of control of the ad content, but there are also other ad networks.
The below image comes from a site called My Gadget Info (careful when clicking - inappropriate video ads on homepage) which is currently serving ads of the adult variety through AVN/Adbrite despite the site being Gadget, Gizmo, Technology and Voip Focused.
Ad in question is a video ad, blurred(by me) to the right of the homepage.
It seems that the problem may be mis-configuration by the publisher, as the ad spot is listed in the ‘Adult General‘ (Is that possible?)
Digging a little deeper, the site appears to be owned by an ‘Irish Internet Entrepreneur’, which is a shame really. But serves as a warning to anyone when configuring sites for ad networks to ensure that the advertising being served conforms with the content/flow of the site and audience.
